چکیده

Using a dual Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE)-Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) Ultra-High Vacuum chamber, we have conducted the first experiments under identical thermal, background, and surface preparation conditions to compare Ge(001) homoepitaxial growth morphology in PLD and MBE. We find that in PLD with low kinetic energy and in MBE the film morphology evolves in a similar fashion: initially irregularly shaped mounds form, followed by pyramidal mounds with edges of the square-base along <100> directions; the film roughness and mound separation increase with film thickness. In PLD with high kinetic energy, well-defined pyramidal mounds are not observed and the morphology rather resembles that of an ion-etched Ge(001) surface. The areal feature density is higher for PLD films than for MBE films grown at the same average growth rate and temperature. Furthermore, the dependence upon film thickness of roughness and feature separation differ for PLD and MBE. We attribute these differences to the higher yield of defect generation by energetic species in PLD.

Kinetic Energy Induced Smoothening and Delay of Epitaxial Breakdown in Pulsed-laser Deposition

We have isolated the effect of kinetic energy of depositing species during pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on surface morphology evolution of Ge(001) homoepitaxy at low temperature (100 °C). Using a dual molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-PLD chamber, we compare morphology evolution from three different growth methods under identical experimental conditions except for the differing nature of the deposi...

Monte Carlo simulations of epitaxial growth: comparison of pulsed laser deposition and molecular beam epitaxy

The influence of epitaxial growth method on surface morphology was explored using a solid-on-solid, rate equation, Ž . Ž . Monte Carlo simulation whose parameters were chosen to approximate 1=1 Si 001 . In simulations corresponding to molecular beam epitaxy, films of 10 monolayer thickness were deposited with a steady-state flux of 0.25 monolayersrs and an adatom energy of 0.3 eV. In simulation...

Time-resolved RHEED Studies of the Growth of Epitaxial ZnSe Films on GaAs By Pulsed Laser Deposition

Film growth consists of two basic processes, deposition and surface relaxation, with opposing effects on the evolution of surface roughness. The pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) growth process has the unique feature of having periods of very high deposition rates on μs time scales followed by periods, on the order of seconds, with only surface relaxation. In this paper we report the first efforts ...

Growth, structure, and magnetism of fcc Fe ultrathin films on Cu„111... by pulsed laser deposition

Ultrathin Fe films on Cu~111! have been grown by pulsed-laser deposition ~PLD! whose instantaneous deposition rate is about six orders of magnitude larger than that of the conventional molecular-beam epitaxy based on thermal deposition ~TD!. Compared to the TD prepared Fe/Cu~111! films, the PLD films have a significantly improved layer-by-layer morphology and a substantially enhanced stability ...

Anisotropic strains, metal-insulator transition, and magnetoresistance of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 films

Thin films of perovskite manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 were grown epitaxially on various substrates by either the pulsed laser deposition method or laser molecular beam epitaxy. The substrates change both the volume and symmetry of the unit cell of the films. It is revealed that the symmetry as well as the volume of the unit cell have strong influence on the metal-insulator transition temperature an...
